Flight FAQ
SJU Airport -- Common Questions
Everything travelers ask about flying to and from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
No. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory -- U.S. citizens do not need a passport. A valid government-issued ID (driver's license, state ID) is sufficient for flights from the U.S. mainland. No customs declaration required on domestic flights. International visitors follow standard U.S. entry requirements at SJU.
SJU is one of the busiest airports in the Caribbean with service from American Airlines (largest presence, main hub), JetBlue (major focus city, excellent SJU network), Delta, United, Southwest, and Spirit for mainland U.S. routes. For inter-island Caribbean connections, Cape Air and Silver Airways serve STX, STT, EIS, and other island destinations.
Yes -- both Uber and Lyft operate in San Juan. Open your app from baggage claim and request a pickup. Official metered taxis are also available at the taxi stand outside arrivals with fixed-rate zones to key destinations. To Old San Juan expect $25-35, Condado $15-20, Isla Verde $10-15.
Arrive 2 hours early for domestic flights and 3 hours early for international departures. SJU is a busy hub and security lines can be substantial during morning peaks. TSA PreCheck and CLEAR are available at SJU -- if you have either, 90 minutes is generally enough for domestic flights.
Cape Air and Silver Airways operate frequent turboprop service from SJU to STX (St. Croix), STT (St. Thomas), and EIS (Tortola, BVI). Flights are 20-45 minutes. These airlines operate from a separate regional terminal at SJU -- confirm your departure terminal when booking. Cape Air has interline agreements with American and JetBlue for through-ticketing.
Mid-December through April is peak season -- dry, lower humidity, and the most airline routes active. April through June offers excellent value with thinner crowds and still-great weather. July through November is hurricane season -- September and October carry the most risk. San Juan's Old City, beaches, and food scene are worth the trip any time of year.
